Look Left blog, TT24 onwards

From the Look Left Editorial Committee: Hello and welcome to Look Left’s Trinity Term 2024 edition!

We’re shifting to a hybrid structure, whereby all new LL articles will be posted to this blog, and a selection will be compiled into our termly Print Anthology. All blog posts earlier than this one (01/05/24) are archive posts from previous years, with everything coming afterwards being a part of Look Left publications TT24. This will consist of new pieces and some archive pieces that were not previously published.

If you’d like to be featured on Look Left, please email oxlookleft@gmail.com with your new piece idea or archive piece. You can find the writers’ guidance at the bottom of this post.

Thank you so much for your submissions, and we hope that you like the new and improved Look Left as much as we do!

Guidance for Writers

Format: Word Document or Google Doc

Length: Roughly 400-1200 words, although there is flexibility to this

What can I write about?

  • Anything from a left wing perspective, however you understand that!
  • We are looking for articles in the form of rants, ruminations, radical reimaginings and more!
  • We are also accepting poetry submissions, puzzles, original artworks and illustrations, recipes, and any of your other creative outputs which we are able to put into print.

What to expect from the editing process:

  • We will send you back a copy of your article with added comments that suggest edits.
    • Our edit suggestions are not binding unless stated otherwise (see restricted content)! It is up to you whether or how you change your article based on our suggestions.
    • We don’t want to change your message! If you think our suggested edits are doing this, you should feel empowered to say as much!
    • When you submit your draft, please do feel free to note how much editing support you’d like; some writers will have drafts they’re ready to publish, whereas others (particularly newer writers) may want more support in shaping and directing the piece. If you have an idea of how much you want the piece to change before publishing, please do let us know. Ultimately, this will be a collaborative process.
  • After receiving these suggestions, you should send us an actioned version of your article, whatever form you’re happy with. Once you have done so, we will publish your article (again, with respect to the restrictions section).

Restrictions on content

  • We will never publish any pieces which contain instances of Racism, Classism, Misogyny, Homophobia, Transphobia, Ableism, Islamophobia or Antisemitism, or any other bigotries towards minorities / discrimination against protected characteristics.
  • Writers must take care to assess the factual basis of any claims or insinuations in articles. Look Left cannot publish anything defamatory, or anything which puts the publication at risk of legal action on that basis.
  • Whilst OULC is affiliated with the Labour Party, we encourage submissions which critically engage with the policies and positions of the Labour Party. However, we cannot publish pieces which encourage readers to support other parties over Labour.
  • Where the content of pieces is particularly sensitive (which, naturally, will sometimes be the case by nature of being a political publication), editors will work closely with writers to ensure pieces are treating the subject issues with care in accordance with our ethical guidelines.
